Title: Forgot how to set up Palstar cw50A keyer with TS830s and k8RA key
Post by: HS0ZFQ on November 24, 2013, 05:13:52 PM
Greetings to All:   This is HS0ZFQ in Chiangrai,Thailand. Before I had a minor stroke 5 months ago I used a Palstar cw50a keyer with my TS830-s.Somehow I have forgotten how to set it up.At the present I use a IC-706 with just the k8RA key.Is the TS-830s cathode or grid block keying? I have the manuals for the IC-706,TS830-s and CW50A keyer. I would really appreciate if someone with familiarity with that combination of equipment (TS-830S and CW50A keyer) could give me some pointers. CW sending speed is now up to about 18wpm, not the usual 25.I guess cw is someyhing that you never totally lose unless you get hit by the big kahuna.
Thanks in advance
Richard

Cathode keying is for the solid state rigs, Grid Block for the tube sets. 73

Richard,

I do not own a Palstar CW50A but I went to their website to review the directions.  When you use the CW50A with the TS830s you will need to have a cable which has an RCA male plug on one end and a 1/4" male phono plug on the other.  Connect the end with the RCA plug to the Grid Block Keying output on the back of the CW50A, then plug the end with the 1/4" phono plug into the key jack on the rear of the TS-830S (it is located in the upper right portion of the rear panel when you are facing the rear panel).

The TS830s is a fantastic radio.  I still own a Kenwood TS-520 which was my first SSB rig.

Good luck getting the TS830s back on the air in CW.
