Hi:

Welcome.   I think you are going to like JT-65.
Especially given the solar cycle and conditions.

A ton of really helpful info can be found on the first few links
that this search returns;
https://www.google.com/#q=all+about+jt-65

I really like the short ARRL book on getting started on HF
with JT-65 and JT-9.   That was a quick and helpful education.

In trying to answer your main question, most of the time we don't
construct a message manually.   Most of the time, if someone else is calling CQ
and we want to answer, we double click on their decoded CQ line, and the software
transmits a reply.   The other case is where you are the one calling CQ, and someone
clicks to reply to you.  Hope that helps a little.   Take a look at some of those online
tutorials.

Cheers,

Neal

Hi Richard

In most of the software for JT65 you can type in 13 characters to send.

For example GM RICH TU73
That adds up to 12 characters including the spaces.

What software are you using?

My guess is that you want to call a station that is not calling CQ, like at the end of another QSO. If the wanted call is the second one, simply double click on it, and it'll be ready when you activate TX.

There is a way to add the first call instead, but I cannot do it now. I wonder if it is the HB9HQX version that has that capability. I used the HB9HQX for a while, but returned to WSJT-X, and currently I'm testing JTDX.

In case this not what you are trying to do, then the free text box, as already mentioned, is the way to do it.
