OK, so I'm only on my second callsign right now. Got issued KB8IFZ as a Novice in '89ish, didn't get general until a few years ago and went with a 1x3 vanity, which corresponds to my initials.

I stumbled across a callsign that I really like that has a significantly smaller CW weight. I understand the whole "be happy with what you got" principal, but is it considered tacky to get a second vanity? The new one would have no personal meaning, which I'm ok with, I actually don't love having my initials in my call anymore. I have a stack of QSL cards, but I'm not in love with those either, and would rather get a smaller quantity of some really high quality ones anyway.

Anyone out there change callsigns like they change their underwear? OK, maybe not the best analogy for hams... (hi hi)

Yeah, there are a few. Along with the 'club callsign' hoarders.

Occasionally the FCC claims shenanigans and we get to read about them on the Enforcement Actions page.  Cheesy

You are not really changing your call sign frequently. I think it might be too much info to tell us a "for instance" about underwear change frequency. (Attempt at humor)

I changed from W9NIZ to N1CZ after 15 applications for 45 different call signs over about a 6 mo. period. I live in "1" area now so why not? W9NIZ was also a vanity call sign when I upped to Extra just a few years ago. I had WA9NIZ for almost 50 years. However, I would like a faster CW call sign and the phonetics are better. The call N1TT came up recently so I applied for it fully knowing that the likelihood was slim. I did not win, but at least it stayed in "1". There is also the real PITA to change the call sign in all forums, DMR, etc.

If another call comes up that meets my narrow criteria, I'll probably apply for it. But they are infrequent so I suspect that I will be "CZ" for quite a long while.

If I really wanted to be a call sign hog especially for fast CW, I would only look at "5" calls ... a fast call is not that important to further that confusion.

You just have to contaminate every thread don't you? Keep your "onion" to yourself. If those 15 people at your work think you are representative of AR, there's 15 more that won't join. Fifteen more that won't have the opportunity to change their call signs either. I hope you never change your call sign Chuck; it's like a big scarlet M on your forehead.

I think you can change your call sign at any point if you want. It's the system we have now, so use it. Once you get a vanity the only way to be 'HAI' again is to get a new sequential call. If none of that bothers you, get into a call you will like. Just don't be one of those guys that gets a couple three calls and rotates them out every 20 months or so. Jerks.

Change it to whatever your heart desires! I got into a shorter call for the CW weight too, so it's not out of the realm of reason.
That's my onion.

I had an English teacher in high school who promised an F on a composition if the student selected the wrong word "there, they're or their" in it.  I can see why...   Cheesy
