Author Topic: Handheld Control of Base Radio  (Read 548 times)

I've been searching online for information on a topic...and I'm not sure I'm even using the right keywords.  Here's the problem I am trying to solve...

I live a ways from the SkyWarn repeater in our area and reaching it with a handheld is next to impossible.  I have a base that can hit the repeater without an issue.  I've been looking for some sort of unit that will allow me to transmit to my base which will then repeat the signal to the repeater.  Either that, or some other mid-powered handheld RF Remote control that I can use so I'm not pinned down in my basement where the base radio is stored.  I'm thinking a range of maybe 100-to-200-feet or so.

Anyone know of anything like that or what keywords I can search for.  I could cobble something together with a scanner or with a rig that can do cross-band repeating, but that's a bit messy.

Thanks.

If you can hear the repeater with your handheld but just not get into it, you could set up a crossband repeater to work outbound.  Then you won't have any issue with the squelch tail delays.

Something I've done in a pinch was to use a couple cordless phones as an intercom.  Kind of inelegant to use vox on FM but for just monitoring it works OK.
