One word of caution, ham radio license plates give a lot of personal info out about the owner of those plates.  Think about it and please be safe.

In the state of Virginia anyway, one has to show a valid amateur radio license in order to get Amateur Radio plate.  So if your Province has that requirement they may be breaking the law. On the other hand Virginia has a whole range of decorative plates that one can request with whatever letters & numbers fit and aren't in use.  I ordered one with my call sign W1GOV since the plate was much nicer looking ("Friends of the Chesapeake" with a crab on it) than the plain white official Amateur Radio plate. So if these people simply have a vanity tag with the call sign there isn't much you can do except contact them and try to be nice. Although I expect they have a sentimental attachment to the plate. Another thought, can you add some extra letter or number or symbol (a dash may be allowed) to your call that would differentiate your new plate from the one in use and still make some sense?
