I like the RT systems software / cable kit and have one for my FT-60 and it works great- I now have a Yaesu FT-7800 can I just get a new RT systems cable from them and use the software I already have on my laptop (all my channels are already programmed there) or do I have to buy a whole new cable / software combo?

They have different programmers for different radios, so you'll need to buy the dedicated programmer and cable for the 7800.

I asked RT the very same question when i was starting out and their answer was that because each radio model has a different feature set, it was impossible to use the software for one on a different radio.  In some cases the cables will work over several different radios—I can use the same cable for the FT-270, FT-60 and VX-1 handhelds—but the software is all different.

I use Rt software for 3 different radios (VX-7r, FT-8900r, FT-857D) and the programs used to access each radio seems to differ, but since the frequency info, etc. is stored in a spreadsheet format, I can often copy the general information in the files over to another radio and save some programming tedium.
