I'm trying to set up xastir with internet aprs servers after a 5 year hiatus. It doesn't look like any of the servers at aprs.net or aprs2.net are working anymore. What's the status of these systems?

rotate.aprs2.net: I can connect but xastir doesn't receive any packets:
Successful connection (linux): $ nc rotate.aprs2.net 14580
# aprsc 2.1.4-g408ed49
# aprsc 2.1.4-g408ed49 21 Apr 2019 20:15:28 GMT T2QLD [2402:45c0:1a:0:44:44:44:44]:14580
xastir settings: rotate.aprs2.net port 14580, no passcode, filter m/50000

http://www.aprs.net: Looks like it hasn't been updated since the 90s.
http://rotate.aprs2.net: Generic apache "It works!" message. This used to give a page that listed active ports, connections, etc AFAIK
https://rotate.aprs2.net: Either "rotate.aprs2.net sent an invalid response. ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR" or it redirects to a random server that doesn't seem to be an APRS server (with invalid SSL certificate)
http://www.aprs2.net/: Shows a "coming soon" page that has no information.
https://www.aprs2.net/: Invalid SSL cert, then "Welcome to aprs2.net. To change this page, upload a new index.html to your private_html folder"

Are there any APRS servers anymore? If it's a passcode issue, I don't remember mine and I don't anywhere to request a reminder or a new one.

Looks like I can get data from firenet.aprs2.net. The US-only feed at port 10154 works. The user-filtered feed at 14580 does not, at least when I enter "m/500" or "r/37/-120/500" as a filter in xastir.

Did you send a position report at login?
Filters wont work unless it know where you are.

Thanks, I looked at the logs (* doh!) and the server will not allow filters from an unauthenticated station.  IIRC "r" filters used to work with xastir in receive only mode.  I guess I need to figure out who hands out passcodes for these.

I think the root cause was xastir not being able to send my position, so f/ and m/ filters won't work. Not sure why, I have my position set up OK, have enabled transmitting, and I'm "verified" on the server, but xastir doesn't seem to be sending my position to the aprs-is server.

Open a terminal and type in:  callpass

Put your callsign after the command and press enter.  Xastir is a powerful tool and includes this feature at install.

YES, you do need the passcode so xastir can talk with the servers.  Once you do that, save the config and then restart the connection.  Bingo, you will start pinging.

73 om, gl and TU for the post
