I presently own the YouKits HB1A three bander. Occasionally, it skips over a frequency as I dial the VFO. Nothing horrible yet but I fear it will get worse. Is this a common problem and is there a fix?  Also, another problem has arisen.  When I key down my morse code key, everything is fine. However, when the keyer comes back up, I hear a static sounding crackle every time. My key appears connected well to the rig and it feels like the connection is snug. Any idea on what my issue can be? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I forgot to mention that I have tried the same key on other transceivers and it doesn't crackle on them, so it must be this transceiver which is the culprit.

The encoder will eventually stop working altogether.   Youkits won't even fix it.  Youkits won't even tell you what the specs are so you can buy a new encoder and fix it yourself.  I had a HB-1A 3 bander as well....and once it broke I was just stuck.  So I learned my lesson...don't buy crap from China if you can help it.

Dennis,if you are able to replace the VFO encoder, you could get one from our company.

https://ba4tb.qth.com/product/encoder-replacement/

And we are adding more and more products on the web store,so no more ebay/alibaba/amazon,you could buy from us,and get service.

BTW,our brand new SW-3B is on the market, you may book yours.

The encoders do wear out and they are nothing special and widely available.

That specific encoder is common in the Arduino community with many vendors.

There are two types generally one has detents (clicks) and the other does not.
Replacing one requires ability to remove the old one and solder in a new one.

Thanks to all who have responded.  I hadn't even heard of encoders before so all of you have provided me with helpful information.  As for the crackling issue, I have discovered that when I turn my antenuator on, the rig doesn't put out a crackling sound anymore when my key comes back up. I'm not even sure what an antenuator's funtion is or how and when to use it.  Should I keep it on all the time?  Thanks.

Dennis,I've talked to HB-1B designer today,he could not figure out the issue unless he tested the transceiver.
