Don’t know if I have a bad fan in either unit but the constant high pitched drone of the fan(s) is way too much on SSB.  Repositioning equipment or mic doesn’t help.  Anyone got a similar problem?

From my experience - use of headset with integrated microphone is the only sure way to operate voice modes without noise getting into the transmission. Heil, Bose and others make nice headsets to use with radio. The best headsets are those designed for aviation use. They are least sensitive to outside noise, but not cheap.

Turn down your mic gain and close talk the microphone. About 1 inch distance.
