Elder Apollo ran Ham Radio on Mount Athos with an iron fist. Bet on it.

N0UN

From outsiders that was for sure but do we really know if he had any problems with other Monks on Athos getting on the bands.

Sure he did. Nobody spoke of it because nobody wanted to be black listed. Like I said earlier, he ran Ham Radio on Mount Athos with an iron fist. It was Apollo's ball, and he made sure to keep it the only ball.

Well that makes things interesting.  I wonder if we might not see both of the other licensed Monks coming on the air on a regular basis.  That would be cool!
I just doubt that they will do anything for at least the first year of him passing.  It might be looked on as disrespectful if they move too soon.

From the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin #1420:

"SV/A, MOUNT ATHOS (Update to OPDX.1420). Last week OPDX was contacted by
Kostas Stamatis, SV1DPI, and he updated/corrected details about Monk
Iakovos, SV2RSG. According to Kostas, Monk Iakovos does not have a license
from the Holy Council to operate, so his QSOs are "NOT" good for DXCC.
He states [edited], "Of course he can apply and get a license, as the
Holy Council used to give a license to monks. The bigger problem seems
to be that the last years (Monk Iakovos) lived in a monastery outside
Mount Athos, near Serres in North Greece..... What Monk Apollo used to
say to me is that Mount Athos wants to be on the air, so if there is not
a new operator soon, there is more hope for a DXpedition.""

I'll believe it when I see it.

I don't have any inside scoop, but I have always found the politics of that place well nigh impenetrable.

I did share N0UN's suspicions that Monk Apollo managed to persuade the Holy Council to delegate the whole ham radio business to him.  Or, something very like it.  It always looked that way.  "Miraculously", nobody else ever seemed to get approved, in or out of the monastery complex.  They may have been his bosses and superiors, but somehow, it always came down to him.  Perhaps because they didn't care and he did and it was one less headache.  Or something of the sort.

It is not a given that they have a lot of time to hear our pleas on the subject and they may simply not care.  That could now work for us or against us, especially if some Greek ham grandee in the know is able to come up with the right approach.  Certainly, if they were persuaded that occasional operations helped them look more like they are an independent entity (government, protectorate, whatever the legal arguments are), that might help us.  But, if they get hundreds of proposals from us, it could go the other way.  Or, they might appoint someone to be the equivalent of a Ministry of Telecommunications to license groups.

All kinds of things are possible, but we won't see this shake out for a long time, in my judgement.

From the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin #1422:

SV/A, MOUNT ATHOS (Update to OPDX.1420). A couple of weeks ago OPDX was
contacted by Kostas Stamatis, SV1DPI, and he updated/corrected details
about Monk Iakovos, SV2RSG. He mentioned that Monk Iakovos does not have
a license from the Holy Council to operate, so his QSOs are "NOT" good
for DXCC. However, in the August QST (pages 65-67) there is an interesting
article called "A Pilgrimage to Mount Athos" written by Peter Vekinis,
LX1QF/KH6VP/SV0GV, where he states, "Monk Iakovos is currently the only
one permitted to operator from Mount Athos.... Monk Iakovos is a SSB
operator who wants to improve his CW knowledge.... he hopes to have a
full Amateur Radio station set up by the end of 2019. He already has a
donated IC-7300, small handheld transceiver, and a few other pieces of
equipment. His biggest issue is that he has no power and needs to have a
beam antenna and solar panels installed." OPDX has written to Kostas,
SV1DPI, about the recent article and he stated that he cannot confirm
whether Monk Iakovos has received a license from the Holy Council to
operate. He did say that since Peter, KH6VP, is Greek, he also and possibly
has better info. Kostas suggested to contact the DXCC to see if they are
now accepting SV2RSG QSLs for Mount Athos. OPDX has sent an E-mail to
ARRL Field Services and Radiosport Manager Norm Fusaro, W3IZ, to see if
the SV2RSG QSLs are good for Mount Athos, but we have not received a reply
back as of print time. All we can say WFWL (Work First Worry Later)...

ADDED NOTE: Also in the August QST (pages 92-93) there is a excellent
article written by Bernie McClenny, W3UR, called -- "Remembering Monk
Apollo, SV2ASP/A, Mount Athos' First Ham". It contains details about the
history of Monk Apollo, Mount Athos and how it got its DXCC status.

@VA3VF

Tnx for the added Note.

@VA3VF or any other ARRL Member

It is possible, without hurt any copyrights, to provide these 2 (92+93) pages?

Thanks a lot.

From the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin #1423:

"SV/A, MOUNT ATHOS (Update). OPDX has been informed that per the DXCC Desk
staff, they do not yet have any documentation from Monk Iakovos, SV2RSG,
that states he is in fact active from Mount Athos. So currently, any
operation by him doesn't count for DXCC. (WFWL)".
