Tom, thanks for the info on the MFJ unit-- also for the info displayed on your web site.  I like the WinKey because it works with my logging program so I can use the computer keyboard for CW.

In a couple of earlier threads here, I've brought up the problem of T/R relay changeover timing (in a non QSK amplifier, operating CW).  There were some good ideas exchanged, including using vacuum relays, relay speed-up circuits, etc.  I've found another way to avoid "hot switching" the transmitter, using the K1EL WinKey CW keyer.

The WinKey has a PTT output in addition to the keyer output.  The PTT can be programmed for adjustable "lead-in" and "tail" delays so that the amplifier can be keyed first and dropped out last with the PTT signal, while the normal keyer output controls the exciter.

I've got this running in my station now, and it seems to work well.  I'm still fooling around with the timing, but 20 msec "lead-in" and 250 ms "tail" delays seem to work okay at fairly slow code speeds.

I pass this along in case others are not aware of the capabilities of the K1EL WinKey.

The MFJ-495 keyer does that also and it has a time setting for output keying delay as well as hang.

I have some stuff on my website at:
