I've got the FT-2800 transceiver from Universal Radio.  I didn't want to buy the software because it was 50% the cost of the radio and that seemed grossly excessive.

Is there any other software (freeware preferred if it's out there) that I can use to program this radio?

Thanks in advance!

Free?  I sort of doubt it...but you never know...
Not free but reasonable in price and a good software program...

If you MUST have free there's always manual programming

Thanks for the quick response!

I was hoping there was some other software or method out there that I was missing.

programming by hand is not hard.  but you have to remember thhere are 5 or 6 steps to do.

1  set the radio in VFO mode

2 enter the desired frequency.

3 put in the offset ( +, -, or simplex

4 set the ctcss tone

5 select the type of tone squelch desired

6 push the save button once and it will ask for a channer number to save too

7 after chainging to channel wanted hit save again, ab=nd it is programmed.

8 press memory to see it in the memory programming.

all fm radios, be they mobile or HT use similar steps, so look in the manual for the exact key strokes you need to do each step.  they are in the manual, but they never tie them together in several logical steps.

after a bit of practice, you can add a freq in about 20 or 30 seconds.

Jim Michell KC8UNJ has his free Commander S/W for some of the Yaesu HT's -- works fine w/ my FT-60r but he's not done any of the mobiles.

My uninformed take is that G4HFQ's S/W is the way to go for the FT-2800 etc. and it's tough to beat for change back on US$20. One of these days I'll order a copy for my FT-1802, and make an adaptor from the FT-60 phone plug to a modular connector for the mobile. RT Systems ADMS S/W is $25 -- of course w/ either you'll need to buy or build a programming interface cable.

Thanks
