I recently acquired this radio and have a problem with the VFO. When the VFO knob is rotated, none of the dial scales rotate, and the receiver does not tune. If I push in hard against VFO the dial scales move and the radio tunes. Up to this point I have been using an ICOM-735 and I want this radio as a back-up. Any information on this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

are you referring to an outboard vfo or the rig?

Thanks for the reply N3BIF. Sorry I didn't think of it but I am not refering to the outboard (external) VFO but the main VFO on the radio.

could the knob be loose or not seated on the shaft far enough ?  You may also find that the tuning gears  inside maybe be sheared as it is plastic and have been known to fail, A fix may be found at the ts 830 survival guide, different rig but same idea.

Thanks again N3BIF.
Downloaded the ts 830 survival guide, as you suggested, and will read it as time permits me. I have the service manual, but it takes the disassembly just so far. A nice detailed "expoded" view of the VFO would be nice....but lacking that, I guess I'll use what I have and see if I can figure it out; however I am still open any help and info that can be provided.

Thanks,

Sounds like the two set screws are not tight or holding properly.  You ought to be able to do some disasembly on your own.  Since it works when pressed in, it's obviously a mechanical problem.
