Split beads are only effective if the core can conduct the magnetic field easily, and in my experience the plastic holdlers on most of them don't hold the halves tightly together enough to do much good. I remove the ferrite from the holder and then bind the halves together with nylon locking cable ties. I can make a 6 to 9 db difference. Be careful, the ferrite is brittle and a little fragile.

Sounds like a good idea.  Maybe some heat shrink tubing would work well to hold the halfs together.
