How far out is the use of digitally-modulated voice communications in the VHF and UHF bands?  In the public safety communications field, digital voice (like the APCO Project 25 IMBE vocoder technology) seems to be making a big surge.  Ultra-narrow bandwidth seems to be the biggest reason.  Does it have a place in amateur phone communications?

You might check out the 21st Annual ARRL and TAPR Digital Communications Conference:

Alinco has made a radio for about a year (the DJ-596) that supports APCO-25 with an optional board.  You can check it out on their website.

Of course, I meant to add that that radio is a 2M/70cm HT, and therefore, an amateur radio.  8-)
