Well, I have the same problem as a previous post, but he didn't get a solution so I will throw it out again.
I have a ft890 and I am running a shielded 2 conductor cable between the data port of the ft890 and the speaker and mic connections on the computer. I get a good display, but when I click on a display all I get is random symbols. What am I missing?

Check your mode setting... ;-)
I hope you meant to say that you are connected to the LINE IN and LINE OUT on the sound card. Some sound cards do have a "speaker" and MIC" line but the impedance of the speaker line is too low and the MIC is too high for normal impedances to match the rig's input and output. (Unless you designed your own interface and compensated for these impedance values.)
