I would rather reduce the output power and thus the grid current by reducing the drive, but that's just me, increasing the load may do the same thing but doesn't that extra input power have to go somewhere? I stand to be educated.

Increasing LOAD will reduce the plate voltage swing which then reduces grid current. Two other results ares decreased efficiency and decreased power output. Like you, I'd rather reduce RF drive.
