Friend : Andy Birmingham (WB2RQX)

Andy Birmingham, WB2RQX was my elmer, OM and very best Friend. He was the President of the 10-70 Repeater Association, Inc. and the East Coast DX Association up until the time of his death. Andy loved to work DX and was active in the ARRL DXCC program achieving DXCC Honor Roll in 1997 with 333 countries to his credit. Andy also loved Field Day! He loved to work contests. He was a Volunteer Examiner, starting a VE team with the 10-70 Repeater Association in 1992. Andy was an Assistant Director in the Hudson Division and a good friend to all who knew him. He was, indeed, my very best friend. He is loved and desperately missed each and every day by "his girls" - KA2ANF, KB2MER and KB2ZMM.

Andy was an inspiration. After a long hiatus, I took my 30 year old tech ticket to a VE session, hoping to finally pass the 13 WPM CW test. Andy made me feel at ease. I passed the 13 WPM, and was ready to make a gleeful exit. Before I reached the door, Andy handed me an Advanced Class license manual, and said matter-of-factly, "Advanced will give you access to better DX, and there's no code test." I made Advanced about a month later.

Andy wasn't finished with me. "How about Extra?" I balked at the 20 WPM code test. "The written is easier than the Advanced," he smiled. "It's the last amateur exam you'll ever take."

I passed the 20 WPM code test with a perfect score. I'm not sure which of us was happier that day. But it still wasn't over.

"We always need VEs" he said. He gave me a copy of the VE book to study for that test. You can guess what happened next.

Andy also got me intrerested in DX. I joined the East Coast DX Association, and watched my country count grow until I made DXCC.

Andy stretched me beyond my self-imposed limits to achieve my teenage goal of one day making Extra. He renewed my interest in our great hobby.

Best of all, he did so without pressure. He made me feel good.

Godspeed, Andy Birmingham. You made a difference for many of us.
