Friend : Carmine DeVito (WA2GYX)

Just to say, I became a Ham again, so I could talk to him over the air. My friend Carmine, was a one of a kind, colorful man...he knew what the truth was and used it! He was my colorful friend and I will miss him.

I met Carmine over the air over 4 years ago. He was always helping me with antenna projects at that time I was new to the hobby. Carmine was the type of person that did not hold anything back he told you like it is that's one thing I liked about carmine. If Carmine knew one of the guys was leaving early in the morning he would be there for you to keep you company on those early morning journeys. I can't even tell you how many times i used to hear him bicycle mobile in downtown bayshore or (slavolia) as he used to call it going shopping or just cruising around town. Carmine used to invite me to go to friendly's for ice cream all the time. Carmine's passing was a great loss to the ham community he will be missed.

73 your friend Joaquin.....:)

I first met Carmine just over 10 years ago whe I first got my Amateur Radio License. He was one of the first friends that I met on the air and he made me feel welcome as a newcomer to the hobby and we stayed friends.I had the pleasure of meeting him at a number of ham fairs and was to his Bayshore home a number of times. He seemed to be always on the air, day or night whenever I called him he'd always come back to me and we would have some good conversations about putting up new antennas or his bicycle mobile contacts. When I heard of his passing I was deeply saddened as I knew that I would never hear his one of a kind voice again. I will always miss my friend Carmine

I had this idea out of left field to become a ham.I didn't know any hams but I did it anyway.I listened a long time before keying-up the first time.
Carmine is among the first 2 entries in my logbook. I just didn't feel comfortable on the air,but he helped. I miss that voice.
Somtimes I would be working my part-time truck driving job late at night /early morning. Carmine was there, along with others on the 330 machine, to help me stay awake and to help me enjoy the hobby.
Now I know what my father meant when he said " life is too short".
I didn't find out Carmine died for quite some time afterward.I knew he was sick and had several medical problems.
I'm going to pass it on.I'm going to try to follow his example of being kind to people and make new hams feel comfortable on the air and remembering to be as welcoming as possible.
Thanx Carmine. You set a fine example for the rest of us.
