Friend : Roy Neal Hinkel (K6DUE)

The amateur radio community has lost a great friend and he will be sorely missed. He was my friend and I will miss him. He touched many people and had many friends. So long Roy until we meet again.

Sorry to hear about Roy. I did not know him well, but remember him from his NBC days and reporting on the space programs. Years ago, probably in the early 70's, I was active in the Jaycees in Redding California and he was a guest speaker for a special event we were sponsoring and I was appointed as his shoffer from the airport to the venu. I have worked him on the air and reminised about that time. He will be missed.

I never had an eyeball with Roy, but like many of you, I do remember all his Space shot reporting on NBC from the early years of space exploration. I consider myself quite fortunate to have had a lengthly QSO with him on 75 meters about 8 or 10 years ago. I had just put up a new 75 meter slopper and thought I would wait until the wee-hours of the morning to test it out along with a new amplifier. I figured I would not bother the neighborhood too badly at 2 AM! The band was fairly quiet and no one was answering my CQ at first. I thought the antenna was not performing even though everything "looked' OK. Then, suddenly, K6DUE came back to my call. He had a booming signal! I was in Kentucky and thought that conditions were incredibly good for a West Coast contact. Then, he told me he was in NC, just a few hundred miles away. We talked for well over an hour about 75 meter operation, antennas and other interesting subjects. I still remember it as one of those memorable "armchair copy" QSOs where you could chat seemingly forever. A week or so afterwards, Roy was kind enough to send me his QSL card which I am pleased to have. Roy was definitely one of the "Good Guys" in our fabulous hobby.

We have lost one of the great voice's for amateur radio. Roy was constantly helping to expose our great hobby to the 'outside' world either through his many public appearances or teamed with Hollywood TV and film producers. It was Roy's love for the space program which came early in NASA missions as the world listened and watched him standing beside the large countdown numbers at Cape Canaveral giving us the live report on NBC.

But most of all we are going to miss Roy's spirit. As you tuned across his booming signal, you HAD to stop to see who this person was as he would be taking time to speak with a newly licensed amateur or to many of his morning '283' special friends. He was always 'ON' when behind a microphone and his warm personality was constantly shining through.

Our hobby is so much better while he was here. There probably would not be any 'ham radio' astronaunts if Roy wouldn't have continued to bring the importance of our hobby to the NASA directors.

We will miss you, deeply Roy. I personally have been VERY sad this week not being able to have our few minutes of 'hello' as I drive into work each day and knowing that I will never hear you start my day with "73 Ole Buddy'.

We pass along our sincere condolences to your 'bride' Pat and sons Mark and David.

We love you. We deeply miss you, 'Ole Buddy'.

Roy was one of the regular guys on our daily schedule on 20 mtrs - 14.238.5 9 am central time. He was on with us last Sunday, August 10th at the usual time and we all wished him well and were looking forward to his return. We could always count on Roy's strong signal and continious contributions to the daily subjects. His absence will create a very deep gap in ham radio and our gang called the "TRIVILONY" group all miss him. 73 old friend. Ralph

I was fortunate enough to work Roy a couple of times and have his QSL. It will remain one of my most memorable cards in my collection. I was a big fan of the space program and remember his reports and even have one or two on audio tape. One of the great Amateur operators of history I believe.

I never met him, never worked him, but he was as fine an amateur operator as he was a TV journalist. I heard him often on 40 meters, talking to his friends, his voice bringing back memories of the exciting by-gone days of the moon shots. I'll miss that voice.

I chatted w/ Roy when I was in high school, several years ago. We talked about the broadcast biz ... and I was unsure about studying communication in colege. Roy gave a great boost ... and encouraged me to move along and explore. He inspired a fun & creative time for me. I worked as a tv marketing producer for nearly a decade.
