Friend : Milo Hlinicka (AJ1S)

There is often nothing we can do when a friend passes away. Being able to post a note here seems like a good way to remember them. I was priviledged to become friends with one of the people who made a huge impact on technolgy and radio in his later years. Renowned inventor and researcher Milo P. Hnilicka, AJ1S, of Harvard, Massachusetts, died February 22, 1998, following a brief illness. He was 85. A native of Czechoslovakia, Hnilicka was credited with inventing freeze-dried coffee and space blankets. During his active career, Hnilicka was chief scientist at the National Research Corporation in Cambridge and held 28 US patents in the area of cryogenics and vacuums. Other achievements include the development of simulators used for training astronauts. He also holds two patents associated with motion picture sound recording. Hnilicka has been listed in Who's Who in American Men in Science. He retired in the mid-1970s. His beloved wife, Lili, KA1CDP, was no less important. I believe she was a physicist, but was sweet and caring, and always taking care of her family.
two stories about Milo never cease to amaze. Ab1x and I visited him one winter morning to help raise an antenna. He was on his roof when we got there. Remember, he was 85 at the time. AFter we finished, he showed us his colection of pacemakers, each one having been worn out INSIDE his body. What's remarkable about that is that every day he swam across the lake, until the ice formed. Lili passed away about a month after Milo, from a broken heart I am certain.
