Friend : Howard Phillips (N6DEC / ZF2RC)

Howard was my best friend since we met in elementary school. We were together throughout junior and senior high school, enter the military at the same time -- although he went Army and I joined the Air Force, worked at some of the same jobs, joined some of the same clubs and even dated some of the same girls.

In junior high he and I joined the electronics club. In high school, we both found an interest in police communications. After our military service, he got me into Ham radio by convincing me to take one of Gordon West’s Amateur “Novice” courses taught at Orange Coast College in 1980.

His “big” things in life were family (especially his wife and daughter), heritage (family tree, Scottish history), Disney (theme parks, the Electrical Parade), space (NASA, Star Trek), dining (fine food and drink), and technology (photography, Amateur Radio).

Unlike many people, he made his hobbies into money-making jobs. His love of, and ability with, the camera led him to a successful career as a photographer. He did the photography at several weddings, did portrait and product work, and spent several years shooting “Grad Nights” at Disneyland.

He also formed his knowledge of Ham radio and his likeable personality into employment as a salesman with Ham Radio Outlet, Anaheim, where he met some of his favorite people and always helped out friends and customers in getting started or making new purchases.

Many of his best friends were (and still are) Amateurs, some got their start in Ham Radio by coming in to HRO and letting Howard convince them. In others, he re-kindled their interest in being a Ham.

He enjoyed making little DXpeditions to Grand Cayman with another friend Dan, N6PEQ. Howard had the call ZF2RC in the Cayman Islands.

As his medical condition deteriorated, and he became less mobile, he wanted to rely on computers and Ham gear to stay in touch. In his last conversation with me, he talked about setting up a new mobile rig at home so he could chat with the guys on the Sasquatch Amateur Radio System.

I know, even now, that Howard is "lurking" on the bands, listening to us all and making wry comments and humorous observations to other silent keys "up there".

I can still see Howard behind the counter of HRO, Anaheim where he worked (approx.) ten years ago. HRO and their clients were well served by Howard; I remember I bought an Icom 781 from Howard at that time and he called my house several times within a few weeks of the sale to make sure that I was happy with the purchase and if I had any questions. Nice man. Product knowledgeable and always pleasant. Bless your soul, Howard.

Whenever I get on the air, I still expect to hear Howard shouting out his callsign "November Six December". What a wonderful friend! Howard taught me a lot, and I will never forgot the memorable times we shared together. Howard, you will be forever missed. 73's Howie. N6DEC de N6PEQ Dit Dit....
