"Earl" was a very well liked person. He was quite active in Saginaw City/County Civil Defense communications. Although I was not "mentored" by "Uncle Earl", many others were introduced to a lifetime hobby and for some a step into their career field.

Rest in Peace my old Friend !

"Uncle Earl", as he was called sometimes, was very well liked by the public and radio amateurs. He gave much of his personal time within the Saginaw City / County Civil Defense R.A.C.E.S. organization.

Although I was not "mentored" by his "gift of time", many others found a new exciting hobby or for some a pathway to a lifetime career.

Rest in Peace my old Friend.

Uncle Earl, was probably one of the most soft spoken, kind joke playing gentleman that My father hung out with. He could really connect on a personal level with anyone he came across. and never treated anyone in a manner that they didnt deserve.
My personal Favorite memory of him was at the Ojibway Island DxPedition. It was an elaborate april fools joke. you see Ojibway island is a small park just off the river back in saginaw, and he was in real form that day "hamming" it up for the people that thought they had reached a far away island. till they recieved thier confirmation cards..lol.... Seriously though I know I will miss him, and the beautiful rock art that he collected, cut, and polished. (had me fooled about the "Rock Show" he was taking me to when I was A boy..)

Love you Uncle Earl, and I know the world misses such a kind and noble man such as you were.

I lived in Saginaw from September 1971 until May 1973. Earl had a grocery store a couple of blocks from where I rented a house. I used to stop by his store and buy beer and talk about ham radio. He was a super helpful guy, which every town USED to have! He loaned me his Drake 2B receiver in 1973 when my own R4C was on the blink, and I was going to opeate a contes. In 2001 I stopped to visit him, and he GAVE me that receiver, which is now working again. I also purchased a Vibroplex bug from him, which belonged to another Saginaw legend, Bill Bruener, W8QQK...later W8IZ. You don't find "Earl's" anymore. There is no longer a younger generation of hams to replace him. RIP, Earl...73 Don K8MFO
