Louie was an avid ham licensed over 65
years. Formerly W3YBZ and W9OTK. He
was a member of the Institute of Radio
Engineers and the Society of Wireless
Pioneers. He taught electronics at Penn
Tech and later moved to Parkway West Vo-
Tech. He enjoyed ham radio and loved
helping hams. Louie "elmered" many in the
Pittsburgh area and was a great home brew
instructor. He used to run a 2 meter and 10
meter net called "Ask Lou." And his famous
line was "If Lou can, you can!" Lou's home
club was the Beaver Valley Amateur Radio
Association where he served as a VEC.
Lou was a real gentleman. He always had a good word for everyone. If you had a problem with a piece of radio gear, he could tell you how to fix it or point you in the right direction. I had a problem with my 2m radio I used for Packet radio. I took it to a weekly luncheon we went to on thursdays and he looked at it, pointed at a resistor, said change it, and then told me where to look if that did not solve the problem. The resistor solved it. And, this without a schematic.
Lou also taught my son (KA3YCZ) his novice class. He enjoyed teaching.
Lou will be missed. We have seen the passing of one of radios geat instructors.

Louis was a friends father and I unfortinately was not into ham radio at the time when I was around him
Lou was my instructor at Parkway West Vo-Tech in 1979. Lou was one of the most generous and friendly instructors that I have ever known. He gave me parts to fix my 1st HF rig (Heathkit-DX-40). I owe a lot to him, as he helped me apply for an Amateur Radio Scholarship that paid 1/2 of my tuition to Electronics School (Penn Technical Institute). Lou was well known for his wild lab coats and bow ties. He had a fabulous sense of humor. I will miss him greatly.
