Friend : Ray Pickens (WA2MYG)

Ray Pickens---a man who dedicated his life to amateur radio. Ray was a
dedicated radio amateur. He volunteered his time in many ways to
further the cause of Amateur Radio. He was a trustee of the K2RRA
repeater system at 146.28/88 mHz. He was a member of the Rochester
Amateur Radio Association and served the club in many capacities. He
was the editor of the RaRa Rag, the official newspaper of the club.
This task on its own occupied much of his time. He also found time to
be the License Class Coordinator and was the inspiration behind the
Newbie Net, which is still a net for the newest hams in our region to
share concerns and learn about the hobby from seasoned hams. In
addition to all of this, he served as a bulletin station for the ARRL,
playing the ARRL audio news for local hams to hear on several of the
repeater stations several times a week.

We miss Ray for all of the hard work and support that he gave to the
community. We miss Ray for his gruff, but, also friendly personality.
We miss the trademark way that he gave his callsign when on the air.
He always found time to help other hams in need, especially helping
out with rides to hamfests to those who might have needed them. His
passing left a large rift in the local amateur radio community. His
birthday is May 7. Let's all say a little prayer in his honor.

Ray was a good friend.....I left the Rochester area in 1979 , after being licensed in 1977 as WB2RJL. When I went back to visit about 5 yrs. ago , and needed some information, I called Ray on Tim Magee's WB2KAO repeater and he answered immediately...knew my name, etc. He was one of a kind....a very good kind...and was a credit to ham radio.

Most hams in our area knew Ray or knew of him. He was a person who you can't miss. His voice, style, and activity were unique. I had classified Ray as an of over-the-hill-ham until I worked with him first-hand 3 years ago. At other's suggestion I asked him to help in a nomination committee. He added great value in word AND DEED. He didn't just talk and advise, HE ALSO ACTED! My opinion of him instantly changed. At that point Ray started picking up activities in the Rochester Amateur Radio Association, Inc. in addition to his existing activities like school crossing guard, husband, father, grandfather, citizen, ARRL bulletins, repeater club activities and other activities that I am not aware of. He cheerfully managed our Fall and Spring license classes, became editor and publisher of the newsletter, actively participated at BOD meetings and reliably supplied needed information when we dealt with a gray issue. Ray's loss was a shock to us. Seven hams had to step in to recover from that loss! We didn't fully appreciate Ray until we lost him. When I remember Ray I am inspired by his capability and willingness to act effectively without excuses or delays. I like the way he dealt with disagreements. That is when Ray's smiles were biggest and more plentiful and when he effectively expressed his viewpoint and the reason for it. It was a pleasure to work with Ray during these brief three years. He has touched many lives in a very inspiring way.
