Friend : Frank Kollatt, Sr. (W5EFA)

I remember Frank, Sr. as a friend and a mentor when I became interested in ham radio at the age of 12 in Palestine, Texas. I have been forever grateful to Frank for volunteering long hours to correct the mistakes I made while building my first Heathkit rig. Without his help, my venture into ham radio and the many happy hours I spent as K5ADI in the 1950's and 60's might never have happened. Remembering significant people in our lives is a pleasure. Perhaps this is why I have always remembered Frank's call sign, W5EFA. I can still picture him sitting at his rig, holding a D104 mike, and identifying himself as "Whisky Five Easy Fox Able." That was in 1955, but the image is still clear today of a great guy who took the time to help a young boy fasinated with amateur radio. Frank was a friend to me and to my family in that small, East Texas town. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
