Friend : Abelardo J. "Buddy" Ma (W5VSR)

The 6146's in the KWM-2 and 3-500Z tubes of the SB 220 are dark. Amateur radio has lost another wonderful person. Buddy was the mainstay on 7240 for years. He was the founder of his beloved 'WINO' group, the Wireless Institute Of New Orleans. Extremely intelligent (a Mensa) and very witty, Buddy was the nucleus for so many of us that met on 7240 each evening. It was Buddy that suggested I "get off" the rock n roll touring road and do something about this trashy ham radio audio. He become my guiding light and reference ears. Buddy made many of our lives so much better. I do and will miss him.

I first met Buddy when he was going to Loyola University in New Orleans in the early 50's. Didn't have my ticket yet. I was a grammar school kid hanging out with the Radio Club crowd there at the University! Later, we used to talk almost every week on the weekly 10 meter net run by the Algiers Radio Club (W5ABD- "Algiers Beer Drinkers") Yes, they did have cold beer at the radio club meetings! Such active fellows as W5BUK (later W5OB), W5VUH (now SK), W5IMU (now W1CCX), W5INL, W5KOQ, and others I don't remember! We had lots of fun. Buddy stubbornly held onto the 7239 frequency the WINO group used in spite of SWBC QRM. I have since moved from New Orleans area (back in 1999) and lost contact with Buddy. Very unique guy. He could exasperate you at times, but he was a stimulating fellow. RIP Buddy!
His last name is truncated..It is MASSA.

I had worked Buddy many times on 7239 in the 80's. Buddy, Boone KB8UN (sk), Desi KU4L and others who's calls escape me at the moment made for intersting conversation. Buddy told me to get a amp which I did but never turned it on and he heard me fine.

RIP

That voice! Buddy didn't need a call sign. His voice was so unique that once heard, never forgotten. I too joined the crowd on 7240 in the 80's along with K9EID, Parma John and many other regulars whose calls I have forgotten. Somehow, I never forgot W5VSR, that unforgettable voice in the night. So long, Pard.

Briefly after finishing a webpage about DX-habits in 2002 I came across Massa's article "So you want to be a lid"(Ham Radio Horizons 1978, http://www.qsl.net/dl4tt/w5vsr.html). It made me realize the obvious: things hadn't changed that much. I have been looking for W5VSR on the bands. I should have better searched the AM section. Now I know...

Who could forget that voice? Or him saying you are only S7 tonight are you QRP? I sometimes think about that bunch and what ever happen to them. It was Bob,K9EID who got me interested.
And just last week I saw "so you want to be a lid' mention.
