Consider a Special Father to me, sadly I say I miss all the fun in Hams in those day,
Still can remember while he was chattering with Gonset 350 Txr and Hammerland Rcv
I was at his side were doing some Antenna Tuner …hi hi …home Brew,
Till now I’m using his old IC745 & IC751A that are working perfectly till this day.
As what we were saying to get matching between the set and the antenna resonant.
I can almost feel the warm saying of the way he on the air.word by word and all the joke
That are none compare to now a day.
Lastly here is the word “I surely like to EYE BALL YOU in the future”
Just imagine ……..I will have his picture later.
Bye for now
73’s from me

Dear Maimunah and Maidin,
You will no doubt remember Spud and Ella Murphy who you saw at the RAF Club,
London many years ago and later they came to Malaysia on holiday. I am sad to say that Ella died on July 23rd and Spud has moved into a home at Ascot. The home looks after Senior Citizens, but his two sons; Michael and Terry live nearby and see him frequently. His daughters Maureen and Colleen also visit him regularly. I saw him with Terry at our Reunion on the 23rd September, he looked quite well.

Maureen, Spud's daughter said she found your last letter in which you requested information about your Father's life. I have been trying to remember and list the following for your information:-
John Axford - Born - 25th April 1921.

At the age of 16 years he passed the entrance examination to join the Royal Air Force as an Aircraft Apprentice.
He reported to No.1 School of Technical Training, RAF Halton during August 1937,where he took an oath of allegiance to the King
of England, His Heirs and Successors, was given his RAF uniform and a little drill practice.
He become 572027 A/A J.Axford, RAF.
After 10 days, those selected for Wireless training were sent to No.1 Electrical & Wireless School, RAF Cranwell. One year later he was promoted to Leading Aircraft Apprentice (L/A/A/). In his second year he was promoted to Corporal Aircraft Apprentice (C/A/A/), and was in charge of a dormitory of 40
apprentices.
We were due to gaduate during July 1940, However, war began in September 1939 and our Apprenticeship was condensed.
We graduated January 1940.
Your Father Graduated as 572027 Aircraftman lst Class J. Axford, Wireless Electrical Mechanic (WEM),,RAF.
Six of . us were sent to RAF St.Athan, South Wales, where we air tested Radar we had installed in Lockheed Hudsons, Blenheims, Defiants and Beaufighters.
Your Father, with John Clements, travelled to other RAF Stations
InstaIling Radar in Sunderland and Catalina Flying Boats of Coastal Command.
I believe that when he was at RAF St.Athan, having tested the RADAR in a Beaufighter and they were coming in to land, the aircraft touched the runway with it's wing and cart wheeled down the runway. Amazingly your Father was not injured.
He was promoted to Corporal WEM in 1942. Later during 1942 he was selected for Aircrew training as a Navigator and was sent to the Aircrew
Initial Training Wing during January 1943 and was promoted Sgt.(Sergeant)
WEM (Navigator/Wireless/under training ).
He was sent to an Air Navigation school in Canada and on graduating your Father was commissioned into the RAF as 55285 Pilot Officer J.Axford, General Duties Navigator/ Wireless, on 22/12/43.
During 1944 he was employed on Staff Navigation Wireless duties and was promoted to Flying Officer on 23/6/44.

In early 1945 he was with No.192 Bomber Squadron employed on Aircrew Special Duties, flying in Halifax Bombers.

Following the end of the European War, some operation squadrons disbanded and your Father trained as an Asministrator/Supplier.
He was promoted to Flight Lieutenant on 23/12/44. He continued in that rank in the RAF until he resigned his commission on 14/10/48.
He than went to the Metropolitan Police College London,NW9, and I assume that from there he travelled to Malaysia.

We hope you are all in good health and enjoy this festive season.

With every good wish for a Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Millenium.

Sincerely
Jean & Tom
