Friend : Barry Hoffman (WA2ROX)

I am writing this in remembrance of Barry, WA2ROX.

In the 1980’s I decided to get back into ham radio. Barry lived about 2 miles from me and we would talk over 2M simplex. Barry lived about five blocks from where I worked and I would sometimes run into him on my lunch hour.

It seems that Barry was unemployed (he told me he had worked at one of the TV networks) and was on the local 2M meter repeaters a lot. This displeased some of the denizens of the repeaters and they were not very nice to Barry.

I lost touch with Barry when my job ate my life. After I retired a few years ago and regained my life, I decided to look Barry’s call up. I found that his call had expired. Since Barry was around my age, I found this odd. I looked up the SSD death database and saw that Barry had passed away.

My point is that you never know about the person at the other end of the mike or key, or what their life situation is. Courtesy and civility is never out of style: there is a person at the other end of the radio.

I feel bad about Barry who was a real nice and decent person.
