I first met Larry, K7ZBN, while in the US Army stationed at Camp Darby Leghorn Italy. Both of us worked at the transmitter site and the MARS station I1DFB. When I got there, the station was an old KWM2. We operated that until the army recalled it.
Larry ordered a Heath kit transmitter & Receiver, and I picked up the Heath kit SB100 transceiver. We built an amplifier out of an old BC610. Larry always talked about a quad antenna so we built one out of old 1 by 1 plank and walked the 20 meter antenna the .5 of a mile down the main road to the station. We really had a GREAT time there and Larry, you were a real friend
and will always be remembered.
I was stationed at Camp Darby. Was there for 3
years, left in December of 1970. Still have a
photo with the KWM-2 station, and a QSL card
Larry gave me. I was in torn-tape relay, and
Tech Control. Went to Florence many times with
Larry, Great times and memories. We placed the
KWM-2 on to a 3 curtain rombic antenna at the
receiver site...what a pile up.
