Friend : William A. Balsley (W3TTL)

This message is going out to everyone that ever got a chance to talk to Bill, he was wonderful ham radio operator and will be missed by many. I had the chance to talk to him on several occations and always enjoyed chatting with him.

In the mean time I am posting his obituary notice that was sent to via he is grand daughter.


William A. Balsley, CPT, United States Army (retired), age 90, of Greensburg, Pa., (and formerly of Connellsville, Pa.), passed away Friday, January 26, 2007, in the Redstone Manor, Greensburg.


He was born March 18, 1916, in Connellsville, Pa., the son of Samuel L. Balsley and Ida B. Ankeny Balsley.


"Bill" was a life long resident of Connellsville. He graduated from Connellsville High School with the class of 1934 and attended Penn State University.


Prior to his retirement, "Bill" was the Superintendent of Technical Services for West Penn Power Company for 42 years.


He was a 23-year veteran of the United States Army and served in World War II.


"Bill" was very civic minded and was a member of several organizations including the Sons of the American Revolution, King Solomon's Lodge NO. 346 F. & A. M. and the Consistory Valley of Pittsburgh.


He was the founder of the Connellsville Historical Society.


He had served on the board of directors of the Connellsville Chamber of Commerce and was past president. "Bill" also served on the Board of Directors for the Carnegie Free Library and the Connellsville Airport Authority.


"Bill" was a very enthusiastic HAM Radio Operator and his call letters were W3TTL.


Throughout his life, "Bill" received many awards. He was especially proud of being the recipient of the Connellsville "Citizen of the Year Award" for all of his community services. "Bill" was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Connellsville.


"Bill" was predeceased by his first wife, Louise A. Marietta Balsley, a brother, Thomas P. Balsley, a sister, Ella Louise Balsley Johns, and his parents.


"Bill" is survived by his wife, Iva Elizabeth Mobley Balsley; his daughters: Barbara Brown and her husband, William, of Medesto, California, and Sally Hughes and her husband, Jesse, of Kent, Ohio: his grandchildren: Wendy Palkoner and her husband, James, of California state, Nancy Brown of Washington state, Stacy Marchelli and her husband, Juan, of Arizona, William Hughes of Ohio, and Jennifer Schroeder and her husband, Scott, of Tennessee; his great-grandchildren: Brett and Meagan Palkoner, Jaycee and Dominick Schroeder and Vincent Marchelli; his stepchildren: John Mobley and his wife, Kathy, of West Simsburg, Connecticut, Judith VanGundy and her husband, James, of Elkins, West Virginia, and Dian Garcia of Pickens, South Carolina; his step-grandchildren: David and Sarah Mobley of Connecticut, Douglas VanGundy and his wife, Melessia, of West Virginia, Susan Neff and her husband, William, of Colorado, John Robert Goughneour of South Carolina and Christi Gradner of South Carolina; his step-grandchildren: Rick Goughneour, Michael Gardner, Allison Gardner and Jessica Gardner.


Family and friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. in the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 111 East Green Street, Connellsville, Pa., where a Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 29, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. David Clement officiating and the Rev. Mark Juengel assisting.


A Committal Service and interment will follow in Green Ridge Memorial Park, Pennsville, Pa., where Military Rites will be conducted.


King Solomon's Lodge No. 346 F. & A. M. will conduct a Service in the Funeral Home on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.


In lieu of lowers, donations can be made to the Connellsville Historical Society in memory of William A. Balsley.
