Billy and I were first licensed in 1963. Bill's call was WB2FVO and mine was WB2GLI. We were best friends since Jr High and maintained our friendship throughout the years. He was a member of the NJDXA and a life member of the ARRL. He was active with the county Hunters and one of the best CW operators I have ever known. Bill's son Scott is also a Ham and a member of the NJDXA.

If you lived in Central New Jersey and if you were a ham, you probably knew Bill Inkrote, K2NJ. He was active in most facets of the hobby and was always there to lend a hand and a laugh. I will miss him greatly. Ham radio lost another great ham and great person with the passing of K2NJ. Best 73 Bill, we will all miss you.

I knew Bill for about 20 years and his family about 10 years. Bill was the ultimate ham radio operator, no one else I ever met even comes close. Ham radio was his life and he lived it every moment to perfection. He did nearly everything, from getting the ultimate callsign for a New Jersey ham who loved and was proud of New Jersey to working what seems like every ham on the planet. We worked in Canada on super station VE9DH, we chased 6 meter DX in 2001 (I got 50 countries and Bill got DXCC). It was a beautiful thing to watch Bill work cw - wow was he ever fast. He served as QSL manager for many stations, and was the spark behind the W2 QSL bureau. Bill was a great organizer and loved to organize ham breakfasts, and Chinese buffet dinners with his closest friends. One of my favorite K2NJ stories is when I was in Plovdiv Bulgaria recently and met a ham there Tony, LZ1JZ, who prints QSL cards, and he asked me since I was from NJ I must surely know K2NJ! What a surprise and a coincidence since Tony printed all of Bill cards. Right up till the day his signals went SK he planned to take a trip in his RV mobile, and in fact asked me to repair a key for him to use mobile....

My first eyeball with Bill was in the late 90's, through mutual ham friends at the contest station set up at Jim's, VE9DH. Bill and I became instant friends -- he was just that type of guy. We contested each season for a few years, even moving our multi-multi's to VY2SS in PEI. Bill was always gung-ho in every operation we were part of. He would put in the time and effort to always do a top-notch job. Bill and I were "rate men" and we always had a blast trying to see who could have the best runs during a contest. What I'll always remember Bill for is his zany sense of humor. It was always a blast to tease Bill with the "King Tutu" moniker -- for the 2x2 signal reports of the County Hunters -- but he wore it proudly and was one of the best in the county-hunter game. No matter where I have operated from, in the depths of a huge pile up, I would hear (CW or phone) "bite me!" and I knew instantly who it was. I had not seen Bill in the past couple of years, and regret that. We will miss you, old friend. 73 and God bless you, Gail and the kids. Gerry, W1VE/VE1RM
