I just stumbled across this sad piece of news.

I lived in northern New Jersey for many years and was almost daily in qso, or face to face with Pete, to my great pleasure. Pete was a unique and sincere man, capable and inquisitive, and his cantankerous facade was just that, overshadowed by his inner warmth and sensitivity. He went on with his life after Margaret's passing, living each day to the fullest.

I will miss him, and all of us are better for having known him.

Both erudite and fun, and as you say Joe, under that cantankerous facade was an incredibly warm and kind person. A great correspondent, interested in and passionate about so many things. He will really be missed.

Although I only knew Peter for a few years, he was one of my most valued ham friends. Always a joy to talk to on the air with Peter sharing his vast experiences from bees to radios. I’ll miss him and his wisdom. I wish I had met him sooner.

Sadly just heard the news about this kind and witty man. A well-respected, admired and trusted educator and principal, and loyal friend to many, Peter will be so very well-remembered by all who knew him. His huge heart, remarkable stories and great knowledge-shared, will keep him in all our thoughts.

I'm sorry to have just seen this posting. As a New Milford High School student (class of 1965), he was "Mr. Larro" the school principal, to me. He also ran our school's radio club, and went all out to get many a young ham started. He even drove me to Pennsyvania one Saturday to buy an SX-28A to start my station. He would always let me lug home the club's Civil Defense's Gonset II for weekend use, and I remember the huge Heathkit station he built at his house in Riveredge. With his help and encouragement I became WV2TCE in 1961 or so. I was no doubt one of many he did the same for over the years. I owe him a lot.

I was shocked when I got the news. I had never imagined that this would happen, perhaps because Pete always seemed so youthful to me, in his voice, his attitudes, and his openness to new ideas. When I first met him on the air in 1971, I assumed he was not much older than I(23 at the time). He and Frank Hall W2QBQ-SK came to be kind surrogate uncles to me, teasing and encouraging me through school (I last talked to Frank the morning of my graduation), internship, and residency. We had many common interests and many rewarding conversations over the years. I am blessed for having known him. Requiescat in pace.

In the South, Pete would have been considered a Southern Gentleman, but Pete made it clear he loved the North. There was no finer a Northern Gentleman!!! Pete and his family opened their home to me to stay overnight on my way back from HossTraders years ago. While I was there Pete decided I needed to have his Gap Titan antenna - he took it down and we loaded it on my SUV for the trip back to Virginia. I will miss Pete deeply - I think of him daily! He was my inspiration and hero! THANK YOU Pete!

Though I had never met or QSO'd with Peter, he was a pleasure to listen to! I am a longtime listener to the 3818 group and have enjoyed their warm and interesting banter for years. Maybe on day I'll check in and hopefully before the old guys are gone. I do miss Peter's on-air personality.
