Friend : Greg Molyneaux (N5CLM)

This morning at approx 5:30 AM, Mel, K5MEL, shared the sad the news
with us that Greg Molyneaux, N5CLM, was killed Saturday in a tower
climbing incident.

Over the past 4-5 years, like the rest of you, I've looked forward to
hearing Greg's daily report from the ranch & then more recently from
the farm. The wedding at the 2006 Cloudcroft Hamfest was a joyful
event as Trish & Greg tied the knot with Wayne, K5ONE, officiating.

Greg was a friend to all & never met a stranger. He had a wonderful
laugh & boundless energy. As he shared his stories of rattlesnake
encounters, chicken & chicken hawks, coping with hunters on the
ranch, fixing water pumps & water leaks, etc., we felt like we were
there with him.

My heart is heavy as I listen this morning to the RJC. The chatter
is minimal as each member is lost in their own thoughts &
remembrances of Greg. As we each deal with our own grief, it is
multiplied as we think of Trish & Greg's mother, and their loss.

I was late checking in yesterday, but I still remember Greg taking
time to include me & visit about the topic (have you ever operated a
special events stations?) & then to remind me to keep working on
getting my 75-meter loop up & SB-1000 on the air.

You see, Greg always had time for a word of encouragement & a
listening ear. When the RJC was over in the mornings, he would often
tarry to visit with a ham or two to discuss various topics.

My first eyeball QSO with Greg was at the 2006 Cloudcroft Hamfest & I
found his enthusiasm to be contagious. Returning in 2007, I found
Greg "holding court" with hams gathered around & Greg was gesturing
about & laughing as all sorts of topics were covered.

Saturday was Greg's regular day to be net control & it wasn't unsual
for the net to take an hour. Each ham's comments seemed to just
invigorate Greg & he would add his own comments between stations.

73 to you Greg...a real know CW ham...I look forward to a grand
reunion when we meet again on the other side of Jordan.

God Bless es 73

It took me several years after Greg first got his license as a cowboy on an isolated ranch in SE NM back in the 1980's. His voice, accent, and tales of modern ranching certainly took me back and was always enjoyable to hear. He had not lived in this new home long and, last I knew, was still working to get his new shack and station set up. I was deeply shocked to learn of his passing.
Undoubtedly he's now one of them 'Ghost Riders in the Sky......'

Good evening, The PVARC in Roswell, NM had just had there first real major tail gate just a few weeks ago. Greg was all smiles at the turn-out of Hams across the state of New Mexico and some even coming in from Texas as everyone was from the PVARC.

I had spoken to Greg earlier the morning of the 20th. He told me that he was going to go start taking down a tower, but he never said how tall it was or any of the details about this tower.
Greg, I want to say Thank You for your patronage with my ham business, but most of all your friendship that I will never forget. We will miss your smiling face at every Ham Fest or Tail Gate that we do.
Greg was a member of the following Clubs/Nets.

Pecos Valley Amateur Radio Club (PVARC)
Chaves Amateur Radio Emergency Service (CARES)
American Radio Relay League (ARRL)
International Morse Preservation Society (F.I.S.T.S.)
Straight Key Century Club (SKCC)
New Mexico Roadrunner Traffic Net
Southwest Traffic Net
Ratchet Jaw Club
New Mexico Breakfast Club

To those of you that never got to meet Greg, you will never know what you were missing, he was a Friends, friend.

On October 19, I spoke with him on the radio as I was leaving Artesia, heading back to my home in Bisbee, AZ. I was shocked when I found out about the accident. I have a photograph of him operating during Filed Day that year that I will post as soon as I can.
