Friend : Ralph Sims (W7COK)

It was 1967 when I met Ralph in the USAF. He was an E9 supervising a group of radio operaters. One day he invited me to ride along with him to town. Here sit this big black box on the floor board. "What is that Ralph, I said?" "Oh, I'll just show you". He turned it on, a Swan 350, and proceeded to tune this wierd sounding radio and called W7COJ, his wonderful wife, Lois. Well, it was clear as a bell and he proceeded to ask Lois how the dog was and if they had gotten any mail. I figured she was just a few miles away, NOT, she was in WY and we were in NB. I was hooked....to make a long story short, Ralph, patiently worked with me on the morse code, taught me some "tricks" that helped me copy the code without anticipating the next character, hence in a few weeks I passed my general ticket and was on my way as a ham. Ralph, become my lifelong friend and he was not only helpful to me but to everyone that was ever around him. He was highly respected and everyone considered Ralph "the guy that had it all together", what a compliment. We all enjoyed his big smile, willingness to help and was truly a great man and I miss him.
