Friend : Arthur E. (Art) Lux (W7UC, W7RTP)

Art Lux. Worked for Caterpillar. Resided in Litchfield Park, AZ when I met him and his wife. Had a 2 element 40M directional beam up about 70'. Could switch the direction. Had a daily sked with a friend in Africa. Art wasn't above taking the covers off a new rig and cranking it up to see what it would do. I saw him get about 180W out of his new Kenwood 100W rig but he wouldn't leave it there for fear of voiding the warranty! I think he finally moved to a place in Payson, AZ to escape the heat in Phoenix. He was a good, learned man. Featured in QST December 1981 with his directional 40 meter beam. In the 75, 50 and 25 years ago column of QST December 2006. R.I.P. Art.

I remember Art W7UC very well. Used to talk
to him almost every day and the discussion
was almost always about antennas. I ran
phased verticals and and would get into the
qso's with Art and his friend in South Africa, but Art's dipole array always won
out. An interesting fellow, and altho we
had never met, considered him a friend.
Near the end of his days, he and his wife
built a new home in or near Pinetop, Az,
after they found out the Apache tribe was
taking over all cabins that had been
permitted on the reservation lands. Really
devastated Art but he kept going. RIP OT

Art was on of the first to welcome my girlfriend and me to
the hobby. He always asked about her licensing progress
and encouraged her to the extent he was the only person
other than me she talked to on the air.
He calmly and confidently provided me a lot of good
operational and antenna information. I have quoted his
advice to me more than once to someone pondering
vertical HF antennas, "Go ahead, so that later, like girls,
cigarettes and beer, you can later say 'I tried it, but it
wasn't worth the trouble.'"
We lost track of each other when I returned to college and
pursued a couple of careers. When I got back on the air,
he was gone. He was a true gentleman.
