Friend : William "Bill" Jones (KL7AKC)

William "Bill" Jones of Issaquah WA KL7AKC died in Redmond Group Health Care Hospital aged 86.

Bill was born in August 30 1921 in Roslyn, Washington and when he was a young boy the family moved to Bellingham, then to Maple Valley, then in 1934 to East Lake Sammamish.

In that move they drove a herd of cattle down the main street in Issaquah to get to their new farm by the lake.

Bill graduated from Issaquah High school and after graduation Bill worked with his father in the local coalmines. With the onset of World War 2 Bill volunteered to serve with the US Navy and became a radioman and actually received by morse code the Japanese surrender message. Ive also seen photos of him on various Pacific Islands including Guadalcanal and New Caledonia so it looks like he had "interesting times"

In 1948 Bill moved to Alaska to help missionary High Rounds with services at Mt. View Chapel and the Anchorage Mission home. At a wedding rehersal he met his future bride Gladys Markley. They were married in 1949 and had recently celebrated 59 years of marriage. Bill attended the FAA school in Oklahoma City to become a air traffic controller. He and his wife lived in Alaska for many years, and following the 1964 earthquake, estimated by some up to 9.2, Bill KL7AKC was one of the few links to the outside world using ham radio. For his efforts he was awarded a Civil Defense Award.

They stayed in Alaska till 1974 then moved to Issaquah where Bill worked in a local hardware store till retirement aged 69.

Bills passion beyond ham radio was music ministry. He played the guitar and sang for church settings most of his life and never lost his voice till the end. He often sang duets with his wife and weddings and funerals and was affectionately known by some as the sweet singer of Zion.

Survivors including his wife and large extended family, ham radio friends are sure he continues to sing, and timely clicking of the morse key can he heard in another place.
