How sad. I became very close to Doug and Marie over the years. I was always impressed by Doug's vast knowledge and quick wit, as well as by his profound decency. When we disagreed about politics, he could disagree without being disagreeable, displaying a respect and collegiality that is to be missed in these indecent times - just as Doug will be missed.

He had a full and fascinating life. He grew up in West Virginia and was originally headed for the ministry(believe it or not!). He rose from the ranks in the Navy, retiring as a Captain. The Navy recognized his talents early, sending him to grad school at Southern Cal and assigning him to some very neat posts. Doug was an accomplished pilot who flew everything from multi-engine transports to jets. He was at various times a blimp pilot patrolling the coast, a liaison officer in the Middle East, and commandant of the South Pole. He was the equal of any flag officer I ever knew, and I suspect the Navy figured that he was too valuable for flag rank!

Doug and Marie were married for about 66 years, and maintained an exemplary marriage. She is a woman of great wisdom and strength, who often feigned exasperation at Doug, but could never hide how much she enjoyed him. She was kind enough to call ME this evening!

Doug had dealt with cancer for over a dozen years, always with good spirits and realism. He eschewed the maudlin false optimism effected by some, preferring to live well by taking life for what it is. Doug's experience of life was as vivid as his public character. His last days were painful, and I suspect he was ready to go. I shall miss him, even as I can hardly perceive one so vivid as missing.

73, W1OFO, es CUL. Requiescat in pace.
