Friend : Landon J. (Jack) Brewer, Jr. (W5DQ)

Born in 1936 in RI, my father moved to Arkansas as a small boy with his parents in the mid-40's. He soon became an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. He entered the Navy in 1955 and became a radioman. He earned his first ham ticket in that same time period but never actually got on the air as he could not afford a rig nor had time to build one. Over the years, family and military duties was foremost and dad retired from the Navy in 1974 as a ATC/E7 with 20 years of service, having been a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict.

I got interested in ham radio in the mid 70's and was first licensed WN5UZU (Novice) and WB5UZU (General), later KI6LO when I moved to CA. When I got my ticket, dad got the ham bug again and obtained WD5JRG (General). We maintained a daily schedule throughout my college years. Dad became very active in the Ouachita ARC in Mena, Arkansas and served as an officer in several positions. He was also the ARRL EC for POLK CO for many years. He taught ham radio classes and was always ready to help new hams get started out right. Although trained as a CW radioman in the Navy, he had a hard time with CW due to hearing loss. During the late 70's and early 80's, dad could be found working many rare ones on 10M QRP, using converted CB radios. He was active in 10-10 and was a VP with many levels of awards. He also earned a DXCC 10M and DXCC Mixed. Most of these contacts were done barefoot into his trusty G5RV that he had a fond desire to use most of the time. We had many heated debates on the merits of a G5RV antenna. Throught his ham life, he held WA4FEU (late 50's), WD5JRG (78-89), KG5QO (89-95), AC5BI (95-00) & W5DQ (00-08)

Dad was diagnosed with esphogeal cancer in 2005 and had surgery and chemotherapy to stop it. It was slowed but never totally removed. He passed away Christmas Day evening in bed at his home in Hatfield, Arkansas. He was laid to rest in the Six Mile Cemetary in Hatfield, AR on Dec 30, 2008 with full military honors.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, 3 sons, and 3 grandchildren.
