Friend : JAMES M. "Murf" MURPHY (WV4R)

On Saturday September 18, 2010 we lost a dear friend and amateur operator WV4R James Murphy, (Murf) to all of us. Murf started and ended many if not all his QSOs with the phrase On The Farm - At The Barn - Up in the 3rd floor Hay Loft Studio - Two Miles East of Roxton Texas. When we heard that phrase we knew we were with a true friend.

Murphy had many interests in amateur radio but one of the activities he enjoyed most was just plain old rag chewing with his many buddies on 14.168. He was interested in and made many improvements in SSB audio. Not to the extreme as many do, he just liked to make is transmitted voice as close to what it would have sounded like had you been sitting in an easy chair in his home there in Roxton.

Most of the audio enthusiasts would meet on 14.178 in what was called the audio frequency, but Murf called them the “Big Dogs”. He frequented 14.168 and we all dubbed it the “Little Dog Frequency”. Each day many of his friends would pop in to chat or just say Hi to their old friend.

Murf was always there to help and advise others with less experience. He spent hours listening, recording, and adjusting ham’s audio endeavors and suggesting things they might try, to sound just that little bit better. I know he spent hours with me, and I know I, as well as many others out there, really appreciated him and looked forward to chatting with him.

In recent years his health had forced him to restrict the time he was on the air, but when ever he was there we all had a great time. In the last few years of his life Murf meet as he described her “my YL & Life Mate, wife, and ham, Rondalea/KE5SSR who is the answer to all my dreams and my most cherished gift from God”. We, his friends, are so happy that Murf was able to find this happy part of his life.

We know that in paradise, Murf is still starting and ending his spiritual transmissions to us with “At The Barn - Up in the 3rd floor Hay Loft Studio - Two Miles East of HEAVEN”… God Bless you Murf.

Any condolences you may wish to send can be sent to Mrs. To Rondalea Murphy at WV4R’s call book address.

Friend : James Murphy (WV4R)

James Murphy, WV4R passed away on Saturday September 18, 2010 in Paris Texas, after suffering a fatal heart attack. He was known as "MURF" to his many Amateur Radio friends around the world and was a dear friend of mine for many years.

He was a very humble yet brilliant man and shared his expertise assisting other ham radio operators around the world with setting up their radios and audio.

Murf was a veteran who served in several wars and also was a retired commercial airline pilot.

As soon as I heard of Murf's passing away I wrote the following poem:

"MURF, YOU HAVE FINALLY GRADUATED" by k3ur

Murf, you have finally graduated,
and have earned your reward,
you've brought us so much joy,
now you are with the Lord;
we know that you are smiling,
and watching all us guys,
from your beautiful new home,
far beyond the skies;
we'll do our best to make you proud,
for we know we're not alone,
the God you served for many years,
will someday take us home;
what a great reunion,
when we reach heaven's land,
like you we'll finally graduate,
and will surely shake your hand.

James Murphy leaves behind a lovely wife Rondalea KE5SSR, who was a faithful helpmate right to the end. May God bless, comfort her and sustain her in this time of great loss.

Thanks for all the wonderful memories Murf!

It was always a pleasure talking to or just
listening to Murf. He was always upbeat. I am not
surprised to learn of all his accomplishments but
very impressed. --... ...--

Met Murph in the late 60's and early 70's in
Miami Beach when we were both fairly new
pilots with Eastern Airlines...
His infectious personality and nearly perfect
HAM shack made us all grateful to have known
him...
