Friend : George R. Hamill (WA7IKZ)

In the mid 1970's, George ran code practice sessions in the Pacific Northwest area. He was also quite active with the Spokane Dial Twisters, and with the Sister Cities program with Nishinomiya, Japan, where he was great friends with Elvin, JA3CZY.

I found him when he was mentioned in a stray in the January 1975 QST. He was the first real ham I ever spent time with. George gave me my Novice exam and was really patient with a 16 year old neophyte, even though he was usually in a lot of pain from severe arthritis.

WA7IKZ was a "ham's ham"... he had an S-Line, SSTV, a Loudenboomer and lots of neat stuff in his cozy basement shack. Everything was top notch and well cared-for It was a place that had an aura of distant places, old friends and the dim glow of vacuum tubes and #47 pilot lamps.

George could often be heard on 2m and 6m out "terrorizing traffic" in his little VW fastback. You could count on him showing up at Field Day, the Lilac Parade and the Expo '74 special event station.

George was probably responsible for the licensing of several hundred new amateurs in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia in the 1970s.

Those of us who tuned in regularly to Geo's sked owe him a debt of gratitude for his gift of hand-sent, impeccable CW.

He is missed.
