Danny passed away after a brief struggle
with cancer.
I first met Dan when he was WN6WLE back
in 1965. He and I would spend hours
talking on 2 meter AM.
When we got older, he and I went
hilltopping almost every week - always
looking for that elusive 2 meter DX. We
spent a lot Friday nights and weekends
on top of Loma Prieta, Mt. Umunhum, Mt.
Hamilton, and a lot of other high
places.
Dan was seriously into public service
and EMCOMM all of his life. Being self
employed, he was more available than
most people for duty at disasters. I
remember his stories about working at
the site where a military jet flew into
an apartment building near Oakland. He
and I worked lots of parades and other
events together.
Dan and I built a VHF contest station on
top of a mountain at his ranch east of
San Jose. We had stacked arrays on
several bands, and high power on all
bands up through 432. We'd be up there
every contest, working every station we
could find.
Many years later, after I had moved to
Iowa, Dan made the trip to be my best
man at my wedding.
It's hard to believe that he's gone.
