Friend : Paul Copeland (K4KCS/K2J)

It is with sadness that I must relate that Paul (Slim) Copeland has passed away Thursday 8/25/2011. Paul was an original 13 Colonies Special Event Operator representing the state of North Carolina KC4KCS/K2J. Paul was a very dedicated Colony operator and a joy to talk to. Our condolences to his family and may he rest in peace. He will be missed.

My Apologies-typo. Paul's call was K4KCS.

He was my best ham radio buddy, from back in
Novice days in 1956.

He was truly a great guy, and dedicated to
the ham radio hobby. His last big effort was
as K2J in the 13 Colonies Special Event for
the last two years.

He was a US Navy veteran and retired as a
transmitter engineer from VoA.

Please keep him and his family in your
prayers.

My thoughts and Prayers are with the Copeland family. I did not know Slim personally but I had the pleasure of logging K4KCS on more than one occasion in addition to his K2J.

Slim was a big help to me with my amp and my
antenna's,he was always will to help with his
vast knowledge of ham radio. I considered Slim
as one of my Elmer's. John, K4LSX probably knew
him best as they talked almost everyday since
the 1950's.

I was stationed with "Tiny" (as we knew him then!) at Pearl Harbor in the late sixties. He loaned me a camera to take to my only T.A.D. trip to Japan. Unfortunately the camera had been stored in Paul's grubby little station wagon that held a lot of his junk in it and had roaches the size of squirrels in it too and the shutter had molded shut and none of the pictures came out but we had a good laugh over it afterwords. A one of a kind good guy!

Paul was an Elmer and mentor to me when he lived in Senatobia, Mississippi. About the time we met (1973), I had just upgraded from Novice to General and had gotten my Third Class Radiotelephone license with a broadcast endorsement. Paul helped me to get into broadcast engineering, where I'm still employed. He was Chief Engineer at WNJC and also did contract work for several area stations. His guidance and teaching allowed me to upgrade to First Class Radiotelephone license at 17. After that I got a job at a TV station some distance away and soon thereafter went to college further away at Mississippi State University so we didn't see or speak often but I still considered him a friend and one of the most significant people in my life. Paul, wherever you are, I hope you are well and hope to see you someday. -Bob
