Friend : Ainsley Phillips (KA5NAL)

Ainsley the "Naturalized American Limey." We had a lot of fun didn't we? We met when you broke into my second ever QSO (CW) and you passed along your phone number so I could call you after the QSO. That was the beginning of a great friendship. I still miss helping each other learn the ropes of amateur radio and driving to New Orleans to upgrade.

We had a lot of fun running HF for Civil Defense out of your Jeep when the Pearl River flooded Slidell, Louisiana in 1983.

You'll never be forgotten. I am still proud to have had you for a friend. 73 and good luk DX'ing the Universe.

This was my grandfather. I wasn't old enough to meet him or see him work the radio. Right nowI'm a OS2 in the Coast Guard (Coast Guard Juneau Radio) anyone know him?

Back in the spring of 1982, I was a newly minted butter bar at Keesler AFB going through comm school. I had been a novice ham operator in high schook in Hawaii. I drove to New Orleans and got my general class license. I was living in a small apartment in Biloxi and was operating a mobile rig with an end-loaded whip that I would hang out my window. During one of my contacts, I met Ainsley. I ended up visiting with him in his home on several occasions. In fact, I bought a Heathkit CW rig (transmitter and receiver) from Ainsley that I have upstairs in a closet. What made me look him up today on the internet (6/24/2016), is that I just poured myself a Bailey's Irish Cream. Ainsley introduced me to Bailey's. I've looked up Ainsley several times over the years (usually after a pour of Bailey's), since the internet got started many years ago, and was saddened to learn of his passing. He told me that he used to get involved with maritime litigation as an expert witness. Many years ago, I remember finding his name in a maritime law case on-line. That was back in the days when the internet was still in its infancy, and huge data repositories took a lot of know-how and finesse and special programs to get into the databases. Back in the days of Windows 3.1, FTP & TCP/IP clients, etc. Most of the acronyms I've since forgotten. I had a little trouble recalling Ainsley's name this evening, but a callsign is hard to forget. For the short time I knew Ainsley, he left a memorable impression on me. It was nice to have known him.

Ainsley, I met you in 1982 when I was a brand new 2nd Lt at Keesler AFB, MS and living in an off-base apartment and commuting home on weekends to Ft Walton Beach, FL. I bought a Heathkit CW xmtr and rcvr from you. It's somewhere upstairs. You introduced me to Baileys Irish Cream. I went overseas to Prum Air Station, Germany, and never heard from you again, but you left a lasting impression despite our short visit together. I think of you every time I have a Baileys Irish Cream which isn't too often. 73s my friend.
