Friend : Bill Welsh (W6DDB)

I read today in a mailing from CQ
Magazine that Bill had passed in November. I remember reading many
of his columns in CQ, QST and other
publications. In addition, I had he
pleasure of enjoying cw qso's with
him until early summer 2011. Tho I
had not had a qso with Bill since early 2011, I frequently heard him
20 meters calling for skcc contacts.
I cherish my memories of his articles
and numerous qso's and will miss his
1st class operating inthe future.
RIP Bill.

Bill contributed to the resource section of 'The Amateur Radio Mail Order catalog and Resource Directory" I published back in the mid 1990's. Bill could explain amateur radio
in non technical terms.

RIP Bill

In 1996, after being inactive in amateur radio for many years, I sent for W6DDB's "Licensing Course Printed Aids." For $15, Bill sent me a very large packet of mimeographed pages covering almost every aspect of our hobby. It was a great help in getting started again. I appreciate his contributions to amateur radio. RIP Bill.

Bill was a quiet and unassuming gentleman of many accomplishments; however, I'll remember him best for his enviable bug fist, almost indistinguishable from an electronic keyer. 73 Bill, RIP.

In 1961 I was a 15 year old high school kid interested in electronics. I read about Bill teaching a course,to get a ham license in Boston. I contacted Bill about the course and he invited me to attend. Bill started the course and then moved to California and Art Davis W1HIT finished the course. Through them I passed my General and this led to a career as an Electronic Engineer. Bill W1SAD and Art W1HIT were fine individuals.

Past Lockheed Amateur Radio Club President
and W6LS Trustee Bill Welsh, W6DDB, became a
Silent Key on November 9 in Lancaster,
California.

Bill was a tech writer for Lockheed before
retiring in the 1990's. Bill also wrote the
CQ's Novice columnist from 1977 to 1997. In
addition, Bill also wrote for QST, 73 and Ham
Radio magazines. Bill became a club member
in the 1950's.

Bill was a commercial radio operator since
1944 and an amateur since 1949. Born in
Boston in 1927, Bill was a veteran of the
Merchant Marine in World War II. He ran
amateur radio licensing courses for 50 years.
40 of those were from the W6LS club in
Burbank, CA. Bill was a member of A-1 Opera-
tors Club, ARRL, FISTS, OOTC, QCWA, RNARS,
and SKCC.

Bill produced volumes of training materials
including amateur radio training tapes for
blind students, which were available through
the Library of Congress. He taught thousands
of people how to become amateur operators.
Bill continued to encourage new hams through
his on-air activity in the Novice bands. He
sent a QSL card for every contact he made and
he created the Ten American Districts (TAD)
Award, which was named after his dog.
Bill name was synonymous with the W6LS
club/call which are well noted legacy's in
the amateur radio community

I started listening to Bill's CW tapes when I
was 11, and started attending his General
class with my Dad (who worked at Lockheed)
just before my 13th birthday. Think I
learned enough to pass my extra class.
Bumped into him on the air in 2005 and
exchanged some correspondence. I am sure
there are many hams still on the air today
who were students of his.
