Friend : Mike Calvert (WA3SLN)

Being a blind ham, when I moved to Williamsport in 1974, I needed help putting up an antenna. I put an ad in the Sun Gazette asking for help. Mike was one of the first people to come forth and lend a hand.

Over the years, Mike and I shared a lot of great ham radio moments, swapping equipment, talking DX and I always knew he would help if he could. In 1999, a fierce storm came through are area and bent over the mast on my tower that supported a 204BA, Warc band dipole a 40 meter dipole and a 5 element 6 meter beam. The antennas came crashing down on the guy cables. About a week later a good friend of mine came down from New York State to help take down the antennas. Mike came over and lended a hand. A few months later, he came over and I put up two 80 meter top loaded verticals to be phased.

I was very happy to be able to return the many favors for Mike in November of 2010. He had just purchased a TA32 2 element tribander and had also asked people to help him put up the antenna on his 50 foot tower. I told Mike I could help. One of the other hams who came over started to climb the tower but got cold feet so, I said I'd climb the tower and put up the antenna.

About an hour later, the antenna was in place the rotator was connected and everything worked. So the blind guy was able to help out WA3SLN get up his tribander.

The last time I spoke to mkike, I was bemoaning the fact that his 100 watts and his 2 element beam managed to work 3C0E on ten meters and my 1.5 KW and 7 element tribander at 85 feet never did make it in to their log.

In this life we have lots of friends and Mike was a true ham radio friend. RIP my friend and I'll keep working DX in your memory. May CW live on!

73, Bob K3UL
