Friend : Mort Bardfield (W1UQ)

I just learned of the passing of Mort Bardfield, W1UQ / PJ7UQ / FS5UQ / VP2EUQ.

I first met Mort at the Milton (VT) Hamfest in 2001. At the time, Mort’s son Ed (W1RES) was attending school at the University of Vermont and the family would come up to visit and attend the hamfest.

Mort lived in Sint Maarten part of the year and had a very successful Cellular and Real Estate business there. He would always ask, “When are you coming down to visit?”

The winter of 2002-3 was especially brutal. I had enough! I contacted Mort about travel details and Debbie and I visited in January, 2003. He rolled out the red carpet, picking us up and providing a place to stay. While there, I met Klaus Rung VE3KR and we got involved in fixing the repeaters and antennas. The ham radio “work” was as much fun as the tourist activities!

Subsequent trips in 2006 and 2009 were timed to coincide with the ARRL DX Contest and I piloted Mort’s mountaintop FS5KA ham station to 3rd and 4th place worldwide finishes. For a contester, this was a tremendous experience.

Mort’s charity was unsurpassed. When the amplifier on the mountain stopped working, he allowed me to come down to his house and pick up and use his big Alpha 87, his “baby” as he termed it.

When not visiting, I’d keep in touch with Mort on 15 meters or by phone. I always enjoyed the conversation as it rambled between politics in the U.S. or Sint Maarten, eventually moving over to repeaters and trends in ham radio.

73, Rest In Peace Mort
