Dad encouraged my interest in radio and electronics for as long as I can remember. We built Knight-Kits and Heathkits together, and he found a beautiful used Hallicrafters SX-42 that we could use for a receiver. We passed the Novice exam at the home of Henry W5HQR (SK), and soon we were KN5YFK and KN5YFM. When I was a high school junior, Dad signed up for an evening electronics course at Del Mar Tech in Corpus Christi (on condition that I could tag along). We took two semesters of hands-on electronics training that I'll never forget. Dad always had confidence in me, even when my college grades were awful. His gentle encouragement was what got me through the very tough Electrical Engineering program at Texas A&M, and I'll always be grateful.
