Along with my Novice exam, he sold me a "boat anchor" old Hallicrafters receiver (model SX-25??). I swear that thing weighed 50 pounds, but it was a great SWL rig, and served my beginning ham purposes!

W0DYC was my dad and I will be forever grateful to him for getting me started in this great ham radio hobby. He helped me get my novice license at the age of 10...I'm 51 now and very active again after a layoff for a few years. It would be fun if he could come back for a day and see the new technology...PSK, satellites, computers, etc. He always had to be the first guy on the block to get the new electronic toys...or he'd try to build one! He helped others get going in ham radio, too..and I know they'll always remember him.

My dad, W0DYC, got me started in ham radio at the age of 14 (1950). We both learned the morse code by sending and receiving from each other, one upstairs and one downstairs. A wire through the transom and an audio generator provided our communication link. We both took the first ever novice test in St Paul, MN, issued by the FCC and received call letters WN0DYC and WN0DYD. He always encouraged me to build transmitters and receivers which I did in those early days. During his latter days of ham radio before going into a nursing facility I was able to do some soldering for him as his hands became shaky with Parkinsons. He will always be remembered as a great dad and a great ham.
