Friend : Al Gennero (K3CY)

I knew K3CY as Dr. Gennero. He taught for
more than 50 years at The Philadelphia
College of Pharmacy ("PCP"), the first
pharmacy school in this hemisphere. During
his tenure at PCP he served at various times
as Professor of Organic Chemistry, Dean of
Graduate Studies, Associate Dean of Sciences,
and Chairman of the Chemistry Department.

PCP was founded in 1821 with classes first
held in Carpenter's Hall (also home of the
First Continental Congress, a convention of
delegates from twelve colonies (Georgia was
not present) that met on September 5, 1774).
PCP twice moved until is settled in its
current location in Southwest Philadelphia,
PA.

PCP became known as the Philadelphia College
of Pharmacy and Science (my alma mater P'83)
and in 1998, then became known as the
University of the Sciences.

Dr. Gennero was a kind and brilliant man. He
was always approachable. Not only was he a
distinguished college professor, he was
Chairman of the Editorial Board of
"Remington: The Science and Practice of
Pharmacy", which for over 100 years has been
the definitive textbook and reference on the
science and practice of pharmacy.

I had the privilege of coming to know Dr.
Gennaro starting in 1978 when I was a young
undergraduate college student. A scholar and
a gentleman, he will be missed not only from
the amateur radio community, but also by the
others that knew him as a college professor.
As I recall, during various periods of time
Dr. Gennaro operated an amateur radio station
on campus and used the campus facilities as a
meeting place for the Frankford Radio Club
(anecdote).
